SUMMARY:SBMM Presents Play: Bronze Sculptures and Other Stuff by Susan Read Cronin
DESCRIPTION:Santa Barbara Maritime Museum Presents\nPlay: Bronze Sculptures and Other Stuff by Susan Read Cronin \n On View August 13 – November 29\, 2026\nA playful\, story-rich exhibition exploring the breadth of human emotion through bronze\, silhouettes\, and poetry \nSBMM is delighted to present Play: Bronze Sculptures and Other Stuff by Susan (Susie) Read Cronin\, on view August 13 through November 29\, 2026. With humor and imagination at its heart\, Play invites visitors to experience the full spectrum of human feeling through Cronin’s allegorical bronze sculptures — alongside her silhouettes and poetry. \nCronin’s pieces are imaginative and disarmingly joyful: small scenes that feel like fables\, visual puns that reward a second look\, and characters that seem to carry on secret conversations. Cronin takes the word “play” literally\, as she plays with words\, scale\, perspective and sometimes danger. While the work often begins in laughter\, it doesn’t stay on the surface. Play explores tenderness\, longing\, mischief\, vulnerability\, and wonder — reminding us that imagination and play can be both a refuge and a way of discovering the truth. \nIn her own words\, Cronin calls her work “figurative and narrative\,” grounded in gesture and emotion. Her titles unlock new layers of meaning across sculpture and text. Play invites us to slow down\, look closer\, and rediscover the simple joy of being human. \nBronze has a long and distinguished relationship with maritime history. For centuries\, it has been valued for its strength\, beauty\, and resilience\, appearing in tools\, trade goods\, ship fittings\, and other objects shaped by life at sea. At the Santa Barbara Maritime Museum\, bronze resonates not only as a historic material\, but also as one deeply tied to craftsmanship\, exploration\, and endurance. \nIn Play\, Susan Read Cronin reimagines this storied medium through sculptures that are imaginative\, lyrical\, and unexpectedly expressive. Her work offers a contemporary perspective on bronze\, transforming a material long associated with utility and permanence into one of wit\, emotion\, and wonder. In doing so\, the exhibition creates a thoughtful bridge between maritime legacy and artistic invention. \nAs an added bonus\, for those of you who have always longed to understand how a bronze sculpture is made\, part of the show explains and simplifies the lost wax bronze casting process. \nExhibition Details \nExhibition: Play: Bronze Sculptures and Other Stuff by Susan (Susie) Read Cronin\nDates: August 13 – November 29\, 2026\nLocation: Santa Barbara Maritime Museum\, 113 Harbor Way\, Suite 190\, Santa Barbara\, CA 93109\nHours: Open daily\, 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.\nAdmission: Included with museum admission (SBMM members free). \n \nAbout the Artist \nSusan (Susie) Read Cronin is a sculptor\, writer\, and multidisciplinary artist known for bronze sculptures that blend craft with playfulness and narrative charm. Educated at The Madeira School\, she earned a B.A. in English from Williams College and studied with sculptors Jane B. Armstrong and Walter Matia. After many years working in Vermont\, Cronin relocated full-time to Santa Barbara in 2016. Her work has been exhibited widely\, including solo shows across Vermont\, New York City\, Denver\, and California\, and her exhibition Fables\, Foibles\, and Fairy Tales has traveled to 18 museums and other venues around the country. \n\nWatch the video

SUMMARY:August Maritime Distinguished Speaker Series Presents “Vision for a Wild Coast at Point Conception: Jack and Laura Dangermond Preserve”
DESCRIPTION:Santa Barbara Maritime Museum Welcomes the Nature Conservancy’s Moses Katkowski for August Maritime Distinguished Speaker Series\n“Vision for a Wild Coast at Point Conception: Jack and Laura Dangermond Preserve” explores conservation\, restoration\, science\, and stewardship at one of California’s most significant coastal landscapes\nSBMM is pleased to present “Vision for a Wild Coast at Point Conception: Jack and Laura Dangermond Preserve” as part of its Maritime Distinguished Speaker Series on Thursday\, August 20\, 2026\, at 7:00 p.m. at the museum. SBMM members are invited to a pre-lecture reception from 6:15–6:45 p.m.\n\nTickets: Free for Navigators Circle members\, $10 for SBMM members\, $20 for the general public\, and $5 for students and educators with valid school ID or email. For reservations\, visit sbmm.org\, email reservations@sbmm.org\, or call (805) 456-8750. \nRegister Today \nThe program features Moses Katkowski\, Director of the Dangermond Preserve\, who will share how The Nature Conservancy is working to protect\, restore\, and study this extraordinary coastal landscape at Point Conception. Locally known as the Cojo-Jalama Ranch\, the Jack and Laura Dangermond Preserve was acquired by The Nature Conservancy in 2018. Over the past decade\, The Nature Conservancy has advanced a long-range vision for a wild coast at Point Conception—one that protects a rare and dynamic coastal environment\, supports scientific conservation research\, deploys technology to accelerate learning and improve management\, and inspires future generations of conservation leaders.\nKatkowski will discuss the management\, restoration\, and science now underway at the Preserve\, including the launch of the Point Conception Institute\, a global conservation science center based at the Preserve. The Institute describes its mission as building a collaborative research community\, advancing open science\, stewarding data and technology\, and generating insights that can support biodiversity protection\, ecosystem restoration\, and climate response in California and beyond. \nThe talk will also explore research and restoration focused on land-sea connectivity at Point Conception and efforts to bring Southern California steelhead back to Jalama Creek. Attendees will learn more about the history of the land\, why it was protected\, and the many partnerships that help make this broad conservation vision possible both on the Preserve and across the wider Gaviota Coast region. \n“Moses Katkowski brings a compelling perspective on what it means to care for a place where land\, sea\, science\, and stewardship all meet\,” said Dean Noble\, executive director of SBMM. “Their work at the Dangermond Preserve reflects the kind of long-term conservation thinking and collaboration that is deeply relevant to the Santa Barbara Channel and to the future of our coast.” \nMoses Katkowski has served with The Nature Conservancy since 2006 and has led preserve management and coastal restoration work in both New Jersey and California. Since 2018\, he has lived and worked at the Dangermond Preserve\, where he oversees land management activities including rangelands\, fire management\, invasive species control\, cattle grazing as a conservation tool\, and preserve operations. He holds a B.A. in Environmental Science from Stockton University and a Master of Environmental Studies from the University of Pennsylvania.

SUMMARY:Why Islands Matter: A New Vision for Protecting Islands
DESCRIPTION:Why Islands Matter explores the vital connection between island communities and the ecosystems that sustain them. Presented by Seacology\, this program highlights how protecting reefs\, rainforests\, and other fragile island environments can also bring meaningful benefits to local people through education\, renewable energy\, and sustainable livelihoods. With more than 35 years of global conservation work\, Seacology offers an inspiring look at why islands are both uniquely important and urgently in need of protection. \n Presentation and Discussion\nThursday\, August 27\, 2026\n6:00-7:30 p.m. \n🎟 Tickets: Free for Navigators Circle members | $5 for students and educators with a valid school ID or email address | $10 for SBMM members | $20 general public.\nTo enjoy the reduced rates become a member of SBMM. \nTingloy Municipality\, Philippines \nRegister Today \nEnvironmental issues are human issues. To people living on islands\, their forest or sea is a lifeline\, a source of food and livelihood\, and a profoundly important part of their culture. But islanders are under constant economic pressure. They want to protect their precious resources\, but they also need money to meet their families’ basic needs for education\, health\, and opportunity. It can be a heartbreaking dilemma. \nSeacology helps islanders protect their environment AND receive important community benefits. Our projects have made it possible for villages to keep protecting reefs and rainforests while replacing dilapidated schools\, building ecotourism centers that will generate sustainable income\, or installing solar power that transforms their daily lives. This win-win approach recognizes the knowledge and autonomy of indigenous communities and gives them an economic incentive to preserve their natural resources. \nSeacology works only on islands because they are extraordinarily important and vulnerable ecosystems. Nearly 40 percent of critically endangered species live on islands; if they vanish from their island homes\, they vanish from the Earth. Protecting islands\, which are on the front lines of climate change\, is now more critical than ever.  \nSince Seacology’s founding 35 years ago\, we have launched over 450 projects in 74 countries\, protecting more than 1.6 million acres of vulnerable marine and terrestrial ecosystems.  \nThrough our travel program\, supporters can visit our projects and see their impact in person. \n \n  \nSince 1999\, Duane Silverstein has been the Executive Director of Seacology\, an international nonprofit with the sole focus of preserving islands – their fragile habitats\, vanishing species\, and historic cultures – across the globe. Before heading Seacology\, he was the Executive Director of the Goldman Fund\, one of California’s largest philanthropic foundations\, for 18 years. Duane was instrumental in creating and heading the Goldman Environmental Prize\, which has been dubbed the “Nobel Prize of the Environment” by National Geographic and news media around the globe. Over his career he has visited more than 228 islands in 100 nations\, and is widely considered one of the world’s foremost experts on islands. \n  \n  \n  \nMarisol Rueda Flores is a biologist\, science communicator\, and conservation professional based in La Paz\, Baja California Sur\, Mexico. She earned her B.Sc. in Biology from the Autonomous University of the State of Morelos and a Master of Science in Marine Resources Management from CICIMAR-IPN\, where she specialized in blue whale research in the Gulf of California. \nFor more than 20 years\, Marisol has worked in marine conservation\, environmental education\, science communication\, and community engagement across Mexico\, Costa Rica\, and the Galápagos Islands. Her experience spans the conservation of coral reefs\, cetaceans\, sea turtles\, marine invertebrates\, and island ecosystems\, combining scientific knowledge with outreach\, environmental education\, and collaboration with local communities. \nShe currently serves as Communications Officer for Healthy Reefs for Healthy People\, leading regional communications across the Mesoamerican Reef\, while also representing Seacology in Mexico as Field Representative\, supporting community-based conservation projects that protect biodiversity while improving local livelihoods. \nAn AAUS-certified scientific diver and AGRRA Fish Monitoring Instructor\, Marisol is passionate about connecting people with the ocean through effective communication\, underwater exploration\, and storytelling. In her free time\, she enjoys scuba diving\, underwater photography\, and traveling to discover new cultures and marine environments.

For reservations\, visit sbmm.org\, email reservations@sbmm.org\, or call (805) 456-8750. \nRegister Today \nIn his presentation\, Ragland will explore the idea that nature connection should be treated not simply as a charitable cause\, but as essential public infrastructure. Drawing on Sea League’s work creating immersive ocean experiences that cross economic lines and bridge neighborhoods\, he will examine how direct connection to the sea can cultivate future stewards\, scientists\, entrepreneurs\, and the workforce needed for a thriving blue economy. \nThe talk will focus on the Santa Barbara Channel as one of the most ecologically significant marine environments on the planet\, while also highlighting the reality that many people living along the surrounding coastline have never meaningfully experienced it. Ragland will discuss what is possible when ocean fluency is built at scale and how that vision could strengthen marine conservation\, workforce development\, community resilience\, and the long-term health of the coastlines on which society depends. \n“There is no institutional infrastructure that normalizes ocean immersion for coastal communities\,” said Ragland. “This fragmented familiarity produces fragmented stewardship. You can’t build a coalition broad enough to protect something that most of your community has never had the chance to experience.” \nChris Ragland is the founder and executive director of Sea League\, a Santa Barbara organization innovating how youth connect to the ocean. A waterman-turned-social entrepreneur\, he brings together a decade of experience as a surf coach\, lifeguard\, and kayak guide in Channel Islands National Park with leadership in environmental advocacy and public engagement. As Creative Director at FinalStraw\, he helped advance efforts that eliminated 300 million single-use straws. He has also collaborated with NOAA and California’s Ocean Protection Council on public engagement and served on the Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary Advisory Council. \n“Chris Ragland brings an inspiring and necessary perspective to the conversation about the future of our coast\,” said SBMM Executive Director Dean Noble. “His work challenges us to think differently about who has access to the ocean\, why that matters\, and how those connections shape the next generation of marine stewards.” \nThrough the Maritime Distinguished Speaker Series\, SBMM continues to bring leading voices in ocean science\, maritime history\, conservation\, and coastal culture to the Santa Barbara community\, reinforcing the museum’s mission to illuminate our rich connections with the sea through education and storytelling.

SUMMARY:Unscripted Voyages: Improv at SBMM
DESCRIPTION:Santa Barbara Maritime Museum Launches New Unscripted Voyages Improv Series with Protecting Blue Whales Blue Skies Program\nNovember 7 event kicks off a new after-hours series blending live improv\, ocean-inspired storytelling\, science\, conservation\, and audience participation\nThe Santa Barbara Maritime Museum (SBMM)\, in partnership with the Protecting Blue Whales Blue Skies program (BWBS)\, invites the community to the inaugural evening of Unscripted Voyages\, a new after-hours improv series bringing spontaneous comedy\, ocean-inspired storytelling\, science\, conservation\, and audience participation to the Santa Barbara waterfront. \nThe series launches on Saturday\, November 7\, 2026\, at 7:00 p.m.\, with future Unscripted Voyages performances planned as part of SBMM’s growing lineup of creative after-hours programming. \nWith no script and no predetermined path\, performers will create scenes\, characters\, and stories entirely in the moment\, drawing inspiration from audience suggestions\, maritime themes\, science\, and stories connected to the ocean. \nA journey into the unpredictable. No maps. No rules. Just go with the current. \nTickets:\n$10 SBMM Members\n$8 Children\n$15 General Public \nCome prepared to offer a suggestion\, expect the unexpected\, and see where the current takes you. \nSave A Seat \nUnscripted Voyages builds on the IMPROVology format developed by SBMM Executive Director Dean Noble during his time at the Santa Barbara Zoo. The family-friendly series brought scientists and professional improvisers together live on stage\, transforming stories about wildlife\, science\, and conservation into spontaneous comedy. IMPROVology played to capacity crowds at the Santa Barbara Zoo and expanded to performances at the Lobero Theatre\, UC Santa Barbara\, and the Aquarium of the Pacific in Long Beach\, with excerpts also airing on KCLU Public Radio. \n“IMPROVology was very popular\, but the stories we are able to tell at the Santa Barbara Maritime Museum may take the format to new levels\,” said Noble. “The ocean gives us an incredible range of stories to explore—from wildlife and science to maritime history\, conservation\, and the people whose lives are connected to the sea. With improv\, we never know exactly where those stories will take us.” \nAt Unscripted Voyages\, that spirit of spontaneity comes to the waterfront. Ocean stories\, maritime themes\, science\, and audience suggestions will provide the inspiration while the performers determine where the voyage goes next. Because every show is created live\, no two Unscripted Voyages evenings will ever be the same. \nMeet the Performers\nThe inaugural Unscripted Voyages brings together an accomplished ensemble of actors\, writers\, and improvisers whose work spans television\, film\, theater\, animation\, and live comedy. \nZoo’s Line Is It Anyway? 5/16/15 SB Zoo \nScheduled performers include Edi Patterson\, Dan O’Connor\, Stephen Kearin\, Kari Coleman\, Ryan Smith\, and Lisa Fredrickson. \nPatterson was a 2026 Critics Choice Awards nominee for Best Actress in a Comedy Series for her portrayal of Judy Gemstone on HBO’s The Righteous Gemstones\, where she also served as a writer and consulting producer. Her credits also include Knives Out\, Vice Principals\, Violent Night\, Abbott Elementary\, Resident Alien\, and It’s Florida\, Man. A Groundlings Main Company alum\, Patterson regularly performs her completely improvised solo show\, PLAYGIRL\, and narrative\, genre-based improv with Impro Theatre. \nO’Connor\, founder of Impro Theatre\, has spent more than three decades creating and performing full-length unscripted theater around the world\, with acting credits ran \nIMPROVology show presented by the Santa Barbara Zoo \nging from Seinfeld to Emily in Paris. \nKearin\, a founding member of 3ForAll\, co-created “Simlish” and served as the principal male voice for several installments of The Sims. His television credits include Kirby Buckets\, The Mandalorian\, and Twin Peaks\, and his film work includes DreamWorks Animation’s Kung Fu Panda and Megamind.  \nColeman\, a founding member of Impro Theatre\, has appeared in The Amazing Spider-Man films\, Seinfeld\, Veronica Mars\, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia\, The Good Doctor\, and The Rookie. \nSmith is an actor\, writer\, and improviser whose credits include writing and producing for Fox’s MADtv and co-creating the upcoming Sketch Box. \nFredrickson brings more than 35 years of experience performing and teaching improvisation with organizations including Impro Theatre\, California Lutheran University\, SAK Comedy Lab\, and Game On Nation. \nTogether\, the ensemble brings decades of experience creating characters\, stories\, and entire worlds without a script—making every Unscripted Voyages performance genuinely one of a kind. \nScheduled performers subject to change. \nMeet the Collaborators\nThe series is presented in collaboration with the BWBS\, plus John Ryan with the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI) and Holly Lohuis\, Co-Director of the Santa Barbara Channel Whale Heritage Area\, bringing a direct connection to the Santa Barbara Channel and the marine environment surrounding the museum.  \nRyan is a biological oceanographer who studies the ocean soundscape. Some may know him as the man who wheels around a huge sub-woofer so he can treat audiences to an acoustic demonstration of what the loudest animal on the planet sounds (and feels) like. Ryan uses acoustic monitoring to track whale calls with hydrophones and his research helps uncover how whales communicate\, forage\, and respond to environmental stressors. \nHolly Lohuis is a marine biologist\, naturalist\, and Co-Director of the Santa Barbara Channel Whale Heritage Area dedicated to fostering ocean stewardship. Since 2002\, Holly has worked alongside renowned ocean explorer Jean-Michel Cousteau and Ocean Futures Society on international expeditions and outreach projects that emphasize the interconnection between humanity and the sea. Holly serves as a naturalist with Island Packers\, where she introduces thousands of visitors each year to the rich marine wildlife and unique ecosystems of the “Galápagos of North America.”  \nBWBS is a voluntary Vessel Speed Reduction program that started in the Santa Barbara Channel and now spans the entire California coast. BWBS works with ocean-going shipping and cruise lines to support healthier oceans\, safer waters for whales\, and improved coastal air quality while bringing together science\, conservation\, maritime interests\, and the community. \n“We’re all about finding ways to connect with new audiences and more partners to break through bottlenecks and inertia in ocean protection\,” said Becca Tucker\, Director of Corporate Engagement for BWBS. “We greatly appreciate the Santa Barbara Maritime Museum for this opportunity to use humor\, storytelling\, and live performance to share more about the incredible world of whales and the collaborative work underway right here in the Santa Barbara Channel to protect them and our air quality.” \n“Unscripted Voyages is a chance to experience the museum in a completely different way\,” Noble added. “It brings together creativity\, community\, humor\, science\, and our connection to the ocean—and gives people a new reason to come to SBMM after hours.” \nThe November 7 performance marks the beginning of the Unscripted Voyages series\, with additional performances\, themes\, and participants to be announced. \nAbout Protecting Blue Whales and Blue Skies\n \nProtecting Blue Whales and Blue Skies (BWBS) is a voluntary Vessel Speed Reduction program working to reduce the environmental impacts of commercial shipping in areas where whales\, coastal communities\, and commerce intersect. The program encourages participating vessels to travel at 10 knots or less within designated zones\, helping reduce the risk of fatal whale strikes\, underwater noise\, greenhouse gas emissions\, and air pollution. By bringing together shipping companies\, conservation partners\, researchers\, businesses\, and communities\, BWBS advances responsible shipping practices that support safer whales\, cleaner air\, and a quieter ocean. Learn more at bluewhalesblueskies.org. \nAbout the Santa Barbara Maritime Museum\nFounded in 2000\, the Santa Barbara Maritime Museum (SBMM) connects people to the rich maritime history\, culture\, science\, and environment of the Santa Barbara Channel. SUMMARY:Love Boat: Annual Gala
DESCRIPTION:SBMM’s annual fundraiser will take place March 5\, 2027 with guests enjoying refreshing cocktails and a delightful dinner.  This delightful event is reminiscent of the classic Love Boat experience. A highlight of the festivities is the accompanying Online Auction\, which opens to the broader community and features exclusive experiences\, luxury getaways\, and one-of-a-kind maritime-inspired items. The auction extends the excitement beyond the event itself\, giving supporters near and far the opportunity to participate while helping raise essential funds that support SBMM’s exhibits\, youth education programs\, and ongoing efforts to preserve and share Santa Barbara’s rich maritime heritage. \nAll aboard for adventure\, community\, and impact. Let’s set sail—together. \nSeeking Donations for the Santa Barbara Maritime Museum \nThe Santa Barbara Maritime Museum celebrates the stories\, people\, artifacts\, and experiences that connect our community to the Santa Barbara Channel and the sea. We are currently seeking donations for our fundraising efforts\, including unique experiences\, travel packages\, dining opportunities\, artwork\, handcrafted goods\, coastal adventures\, maritime-inspired items\, and other one-of-a-kind offerings. Your contribution helps support SBMM’s exhibitions\, educational programs\, and community engagement while introducing our supporters to some of the Central Coast’s most inspiring businesses\, makers\, and destinations. \nFor questions\, please contact SBMM Director of Development Emily Duncan by calling (805) 456-8744 or emailing eduncan@sbmm.org.
