SUMMARY:September Maritime Distinguished Speaker Series Presents “The Blue Blind Spot: The Most Important Infrastructure Project That No One Is Funding”
DESCRIPTION:SBMM is pleased to present “The Blue Blind Spot: The Most Important Infrastructure Project That No One Is Funding” as part of its September Maritime Distinguished Speaker Series. The program will feature Chris Ragland\, founder and executive director of Sea League\, for a thought-provoking talk on ocean access\, stewardship\, and the importance of building meaningful connections between coastal communities and the marine environments that surround them on Thursday\, September 17\, 2026\, at 7:00 p.m. at the museum. SBMM members are invited to a pre-lecture reception from 6:15–6:45 p.m. \nTickets: Free for Navigators Circle members\, $10 for SBMM members\, $20 for the general public\, and $5 for students and educators with valid school ID or email. For reservations\, visit sbmm.org\, email reservations@sbmm.org\, or call (805) 456-8750. \nRegister Today \nIn his presentation\, Ragland will explore the idea that nature connection should be treated not simply as a charitable cause\, but as essential public infrastructure. Drawing on Sea League’s work creating immersive ocean experiences that cross economic lines and bridge neighborhoods\, he will examine how direct connection to the sea can cultivate future stewards\, scientists\, entrepreneurs\, and the workforce needed for a thriving blue economy. \nThe talk will focus on the Santa Barbara Channel as one of the most ecologically significant marine environments on the planet\, while also highlighting the reality that many people living along the surrounding coastline have never meaningfully experienced it. Ragland will discuss what is possible when ocean fluency is built at scale and how that vision could strengthen marine conservation\, workforce development\, community resilience\, and the long-term health of the coastlines on which society depends. \n“There is no institutional infrastructure that normalizes ocean immersion for coastal communities\,” said Ragland. “This fragmented familiarity produces fragmented stewardship. You can’t build a coalition broad enough to protect something that most of your community has never had the chance to experience.” \nChris Ragland is the founder and executive director of Sea League\, a Santa Barbara organization innovating how youth connect to the ocean. A waterman-turned-social entrepreneur\, he brings together a decade of experience as a surf coach\, lifeguard\, and kayak guide in Channel Islands National Park with leadership in environmental advocacy and public engagement. As Creative Director at FinalStraw\, he helped advance efforts that eliminated 300 million single-use straws. He has also collaborated with NOAA and California’s Ocean Protection Council on public engagement and served on the Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary Advisory Council. \n“Chris Ragland brings an inspiring and necessary perspective to the conversation about the future of our coast\,” said SBMM Executive Director Dean Noble. “His work challenges us to think differently about who has access to the ocean\, why that matters\, and how those connections shape the next generation of marine stewards.” \nThrough the Maritime Distinguished Speaker Series\, SBMM continues to bring leading voices in ocean science\, maritime history\, conservation\, and coastal culture to the Santa Barbara community\, reinforcing the museum’s mission to illuminate our rich connections with the sea through education and storytelling.

SUMMARY:Why Islands Matter: A New Vision for Protecting Islands
DESCRIPTION:Why Islands Matter explores the vital connection between island communities and the ecosystems that sustain them. Presented by Seacology\, this program highlights how protecting reefs\, rainforests\, and other fragile island environments can also bring meaningful benefits to local people through education\, renewable energy\, and sustainable livelihoods. With more than 35 years of global conservation work\, Seacology offers an inspiring look at why islands are both uniquely important and urgently in need of protection. \n Presentation and Discussion\nThursday\, August 27\, 2026\n6:00-7:30 p.m. \n🎟 Tickets: Free for Navigators Circle members | $5 for students and educators with a valid school ID or email address | $10 for SBMM members | $20 general public.\nTo enjoy the reduced rates become a member of SBMM. \nTingloy Municipality\, Philippines \nRegister Today \nEnvironmental issues are human issues. To people living on islands\, their forest or sea is a lifeline\, a source of food and livelihood\, and a profoundly important part of their culture. But islanders are under constant economic pressure. They want to protect their precious resources\, but they also need money to meet their families’ basic needs for education\, health\, and opportunity. It can be a heartbreaking dilemma. \nSeacology helps islanders protect their environment AND receive important community benefits. Our projects have made it possible for villages to keep protecting reefs and rainforests while replacing dilapidated schools\, building ecotourism centers that will generate sustainable income\, or installing solar power that transforms their daily lives. This win-win approach recognizes the knowledge and autonomy of indigenous communities and gives them an economic incentive to preserve their natural resources. \nSeacology works only on islands because they are extraordinarily important and vulnerable ecosystems. Nearly 40 percent of critically endangered species live on islands; if they vanish from their island homes\, they vanish from the Earth. Protecting islands\, which are on the front lines of climate change\, is now more critical than ever.  \nSince Seacology’s founding 35 years ago\, we have launched over 450 projects in 74 countries\, protecting more than 1.6 million acres of vulnerable marine and terrestrial ecosystems.  \nThrough our travel program\, supporters can visit our projects and see their impact in person. \n \n  \nSince 1999\, Duane Silverstein has been the Executive Director of Seacology\, an international nonprofit with the sole focus of preserving islands – their fragile habitats\, vanishing species\, and historic cultures – across the globe. Before heading Seacology\, he was the Executive Director of the Goldman Fund\, one of California’s largest philanthropic foundations\, for 18 years. Duane was instrumental in creating and heading the Goldman Environmental Prize\, which has been dubbed the “Nobel Prize of the Environment” by National Geographic and news media around the globe. Over his career he has visited more than 228 islands in 100 nations\, and is widely considered one of the world’s foremost experts on islands. \n  \n  \n  \nMarisol Rueda Flores is a biologist\, science communicator\, and conservation professional based in La Paz\, Baja California Sur\, Mexico. She earned her B.Sc. in Biology from the Autonomous University of the State of Morelos and a Master of Science in Marine Resources Management from CICIMAR-IPN\, where she specialized in blue whale research in the Gulf of California. \nFor more than 20 years\, Marisol has worked in marine conservation\, environmental education\, science communication\, and community engagement across Mexico\, Costa Rica\, and the Galápagos Islands. Her experience spans the conservation of coral reefs\, cetaceans\, sea turtles\, marine invertebrates\, and island ecosystems\, combining scientific knowledge with outreach\, environmental education\, and collaboration with local communities. \nShe currently serves as Communications Officer for Healthy Reefs for Healthy People\, leading regional communications across the Mesoamerican Reef\, while also representing Seacology in Mexico as Field Representative\, supporting community-based conservation projects that protect biodiversity while improving local livelihoods. \nAn AAUS-certified scientific diver and AGRRA Fish Monitoring Instructor\, Marisol is passionate about connecting people with the ocean through effective communication\, underwater exploration\, and storytelling. In her free time\, she enjoys scuba diving\, underwater photography\, and traveling to discover new cultures and marine environments.

SUMMARY:Join us for “How Our Skeletons Can Save Our Reefs” with Dr. Marley Dewey
DESCRIPTION:Bone to Reef: UC Santa Barbara Bioengineer Dr. Marley Dewey Shares Breakthrough Path for Coral Recovery at SBMM \nSBMM is proud to present the May installment of its Maritime Distinguished Speaker Series\, “How Our Skeletons Can Save Our Reefs\,” featuring Dr. Marley Dewey\, assistant professor of bioengineering at UC Santa Barbara. The lecture will take place on Thursday\, May 21\, 2026 at 7:00 p.m. at the Santa Barbara Maritime Museum. SBMM members are invited to a pre-lecture reception from 6:15–6:45 p.m. \nTickets are free for Navigators Circle members\, $10 for SBMM members\, $20 for the general public\, and $5 for students and educators with a valid school ID or email. Reserve online below\, email reservations@sbmm.org\, or call (805) 456-8750. \nRegister Today \nCoral reefs are built by living animals that create calcium-based skeletons—structures that support entire ecosystems\, protect coastlines\, and provide food and livelihoods for millions of people worldwide. However\, due to ocean warming and acidification\, coral reefs have declined by more than 50 percent since 1950. Traditional restoration efforts have struggled to keep pace with this rapid loss\, prompting scientists to explore innovative new solutions. \nDr. Dewey’s research offers a groundbreaking perspective by applying advances in biomaterials and tissue engineering—originally developed to repair human bone—to coral reef restoration. While coral skeletons have historically been used to repair human bones\, Dr. Dewey’s lab reverses this approach\, using lessons from bone repair technologies to design materials that can help accelerate coral growth and rebuild damaged reef structures. \nHer presentation will explore the scientific connections between human and coral skeletons\, the history of biomaterials research\, and the emerging field of coral tissue engineering. This work has significant implications for coastal ecosystems worldwide\, including those that influence ocean health and biodiversity along the California coast and within the Santa Barbara Channel. \n“SBMM is honored to host researchers like Dr. Dewey\, whose work demonstrates how innovation and science can help address some of the most pressing challenges facing our oceans\,” said Dean Noble\, executive director of the Santa Barbara Maritime Museum. “Her research reflects the kind of forward-thinking solutions that inspire hope and deepen our community’s connection to ocean stewardship.” \nSBMM Director of Education Lis Perry added\, “Our Maritime Distinguished Speaker Series brings leading voices in ocean science and conservation directly to our community. Dr. Dewey’s presentation highlights how interdisciplinary research can help protect marine ecosystems and inspire the next generation of ocean advocates.” \n \nDr. Marley Dewey is an assistant professor of bioengineering at UC Santa Barbara. She earned her BS in chemical engineering from the University of Maine and her PhD in materials science and engineering from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign\, where she was a National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellow and recipient of the Annual Innovation Award for Outstanding PhD Thesis. She later served as an NIH Clinical and Translational Science Fellow at the McGowan Institute for Regenerative Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh. Her research focuses on developing biomaterials and nanoparticles to improve human bone repair\, treat disease\, and restore coral reef ecosystems. \n“Corals and humans both rely on skeletons to provide structure and support\,” said Dr. Dewey. “By applying what we’ve learned from repairing human bone\, we can develop new tools that may help coral reefs recover and strengthen in the face of environmental change.” \nThis presentation reflects SBMM’s mission to explore and interpret the rich maritime and marine ecosystem history of the Santa Barbara Channel while connecting the public with contemporary research that shapes the future of our oceans.

SUMMARY:Aquean Artist’s Gallery Walkthrough and Book Signing
DESCRIPTION:Aquean Artist’s Gallery Walkthrough and Book Signing\nat the Santa Barbara Maritime Museum \nSaturday\, May 16\, 12:30PM-2:30PM \nSBMM announces an artist walkthrough for Aquean\, an evocative new exhibition exploring time\, tides\, and transformation. Artists David Ellis and Larry Vigon will take visitors though the exhibit’s multimedia experience which consists of paintings\, photographs\, videos and other art forms. Aquean examines the sea as both subject and metaphor\, revealing cycles of renewal and impermanence that shape our coastal world. The artist walkthrough is scheduled for 12:30PM on May 16\, 2026. It will be followed by book signings from both artists. \n“Aquean is a collaboration that captures the constant movement of the sea as it recreates itself and everything it touches\,” said David Ellis. “It expresses the tension between the found beauty and powerful uncertainty of a relentless ecosystem.” \nExhibition highlights focus on two major bodies of work by the artists: \nDavid Ellis’s Lobospheres: The Lost Souls of Point Lobos\, a 20-year exploration that consists of abstract impressionistic photographs of textures\, silhouettes and mythical figures discovered in the wave-carved rock forms of Point Lobos\, California. It is an interpretive archive that captures its sheer\, subliminal beauty\, as well as preserving and documenting an extraordinary landmark that has an expiration date. \nLarry Vigon’s Flotsam & Jetsam is just that. It is an extensive impression of the sea that consists of paintings\, large-scale prints\, found objects\, linocuts\, video and dimensional collages. \nFlotsam & Jetsam extends Larry’s world-class artistic sensibilities. His decades of album cover design for artists like Fleetwood Mac\, Eric Clapton\, and Bonnie Raitt\, seen by hundreds of millions of people around the world has landed him in the Album Cover Hall of Fame\, while his commercial and logo identity work has built leadership brands for DreamWorks\, Fandango\, Hard Rock Hotel in Las Vegas\, and Epson. His work also spans Broadway posters\, advertising campaigns\, magazines\, and books—including his design for The Red Book by C.G. Jung\, considered the most significant psychoanalytic publication of the last century. \n“We are thrilled to bring together the vivid visions of David Ellis and Larry Vigon in Aquean\,” said SBMM Curator/Director of Collections & Exhibits Emily Falke. “Their work captures the power and fragility of the ever-changing California coastline. \nTogether\, the works of David Ellis and Larry Vigon remind viewers that what endures and what vanishes are forever intertwined by the sea.” \nAdmission is free for book signing guests — just mention “Book Signing” at the museum kiosk.

SUMMARY:SBMM Presents Aquean: Photographs\, Paintings\, and Prints
DESCRIPTION:Aquean is an evocative new exhibition exploring time\, tides\, and transformation through the multimedia works of artists David Ellis and Larry Vigon. Featuring photographs\, paintings\, prints\, video\, and mixed media\, the show invites visitors to consider the sea as both subject and metaphor—revealing the delicate balance between permanence and loss along California’s coastlines\, where what endures and what vanishes are bound together by the ocean’s rhythms. Highlights include Ellis’s Lobospheres: The Lost Souls of Point Lobos\, a 20-year photographic exploration of wave-carved forms at Point Lobos\, and Vigon’s Flotsam & Jetsam\, an immersive collection of paintings\, large-scale prints\, found objects\, linocuts\, video\, and dimensional collages. Together\, their work captures the power and fragility of an ever-changing shoreline. \n \nAquean\nImpressions of the Sea & Shore \nAquean explores the sea as both subject and metaphor\, reflecting on the delicate balance between permanence and loss along California’s coastlines. What endures and what vanishes are inseparable\, bound together by the rhythms of the ocean. The sea is more than a physical presence. It is a lens through which to consider time\, change and the fragile continuity of our coastal world. \n \n“Aquean is a collaboration that captures the constant movement of the sea as it recreates itself and everything it touches\,” said David Ellis. “It expresses the tension between the found beauty and powerful uncertainty of a relentless ecosystem. Many thanks to the Santa Barbara Maritime Museum for bringing Aquean to the public.” \nExhibition highlights focus on two major bodies of work by the artists: \nDavid Ellis’s Lobospheres: The Lost Souls of Point Lobos is a 20-year exploration that consists of abstract\, impressionistic photographs of textures\, silhouettes\, and mythical figures discovered in the wave-carved rock forms of Point Lobos\, California. It is a celebration\, an elegy\, and a cautionary tale—an interpretive archive that captures its sheer\, subliminal beauty\, while also preserving and documenting an extraordinary landmark that may be changing with time. Last June\, selected photographs from Lobospheres received top honors at the 24th Annual International Art Exchange exhibited at the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum. \nLarry Vigon’s Flotsam & Jetsam is an expansive impression of the sea that includes paintings\, large-scale prints\, found objects\, linocuts\, video\, and dimensional collages. \nLarry recalled that once\, Picasso was asked what his paintings meant. Picasso said\, “Do you ever know what the birds are singing? You don’t. But you listen to them anyway. So\, sometimes with art\, it is important just to look.” \nFlotsam & Jetsam extends Vigon’s world-class artistic sensibilities. His decades of album cover design for artists like Fleetwood Mac\, Eric Clapton\, and Bonnie Raitt—seen by hundreds of millions of people worldwide—landed him in the Album Cover Hall of Fame. His commercial and logo identity work has helped build leadership brands for DreamWorks\, Fandango\, Hard Rock Hotel in Las Vegas\, and Epson. His work also spans Broadway posters\, advertising campaigns\, magazines\, and books—including his design for The Red Book by C.G. Jung\, considered one of the most significant psychoanalytic publications of the last century. \n“We are thrilled to bring together the vivid visions of David Ellis and Larry Vigon in Aquean\,” said SBMM Curator/Director of Collections & Exhibits Emily Falke. “Their work captures the power and fragility of the ever-changing California coastline. In Aquean\, the sea is more than a physical presence—it becomes a lens for time and change\, reminding us that what endures and what vanishes are forever intertwined by the rhythms of the ocean.”
